The Meaning of Heroes for Children: How to Create a Caring Generation

Does appreciating the services of heroes only apply to those who fought for the nation and state? Every November 10, we remember the heroes who sacrificed themselves for Indonesia’s independence. However, how do today’s children understand the meaning of a hero?

Parents can help children understand the meaning of a hero in simple but meaningful ways, such as:

  1. Understanding the Meaning of a Hero
A hero is a figure who is willing to sacrifice, help others, and do good for the common good. For example, Bung Tomo who fought for Indonesia’s independence.
  2. Providing Learning Resources
Inspirational books or films about Ki Hajar Dewantara, Sultan Hasanuddin, or Maria Walanda Maramis can be an option. Invite children to read together and discuss to understand the values of heroism.
  3. Instilling Heroic Values
Talk about courage, caring, sacrifice, and honesty. For example: courage is admitting mistakes; caring means caring for friends or the environment. Discuss its application in everyday life.
  4. Involving Children in Social Activities
Invite children to social communities to hone empathy, caring, and courage. Provide hands-on experiences, such as sharing toys or reading stories to friends. This helps children learn to respect others without feeling superior.
  5. Encourage Kindness Initiatives
Give appreciation for children’s positive actions, for example: “Thank you, Big Brother, for helping your little brother feel happy again,” or “Good job planting chilies with your friends. That’s an example of good behavior.”

Understanding the meaning of a hero doesn’t have to be difficult. With a warm and empathetic approach, children will learn that heroism begins with small actions at home. Greetings Inspiration!
